One of the best activities is the Marshall Point Lighthouse which has a summer-only Museum. The way to access the lighthouse is through a long wooden ramp. And with the lighthouse on rocks makes it a charming scenic destination.

Another remarkable fact about the Marshall Point Lighthouse is seen in the movie Forrest Gump. 

It was the lighthouse Forrest Gump ran to upon completing his cross-country run. Therefore, fans of Forrest Gump may be interested in seeing the Marshall Point Lighthouse.

If you are interested in spending the day outdoors, then different areas of interest may be Owls Head State Park, a 13.5-acre park with gorgeous views.

If you are looking for a beach setting, then Birch Point State Park may be of interest; while here, you may be able to see lobster boats and all their traps making it a great place to visit.

Another great attraction is Monhegan Island. If you have time, head towards Port Clyde and catch a ferry. 

While here, you can rent a kayak or check out the different areas to dine, shop, dine and enjoy the day. Monhegan Island is great to spend the day or a weekend away.

Long Island Sound, Connecticut

Long Island Sound, Connecticut, is a great vacation destination. The island’s various activities make it perfect for families, couples, and weekend getaways with friends.

One of the best aspects of Long Island Sound is the Hammonasset Beach State Park

This popular beach features a Boardwalk allowing you to take a stroll and enjoy the salty crisp air while hearing the sounds of the ocean. Therefore, making it a great way to spend the day with the ones you love.

Another outdoor park featured within Long Island Sound is Silver Sands State Park. The park has 297 acres of Sandy beaches that feature fishing, swimming, dunes, and salt marsh. While here, check out the 14-acre bird sanctuary on Charles Island.

Remember to add the New England National Scenic Trail to your itinerary while visiting the Long Island Sound. 

The trails are approximately 215 miles and extend through 41 communities from Guilford, Connecticut, to Long Island Sound, allowing you to see the New Hampshire State Border. 

Although hiking the entire Trail during your stay is likely impossible, walking a small portion of it is worth it.

Another attraction to visit while along Long Island Sound is the Vanderbilt Museum & Planetarium. Take a peek inside the Vanderbilt home and view the family living quarters while taking in the fantastic views of the surrounding property.

If traveling with children, visiting the Harbes Family Farm should be on your list of places to see. This family fun attraction features approximately 8 Acres of Fun. 

Activities include bouncing pillows, a sports zone obstacle course, a maze, and farm animals. Therefore, Harbes Family Farm is a perfect attraction for families with kids.

Another excellent attraction featured on the Long Island Sound is the Sycamore Hill National Historic Site. 

This is the home of the 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. 

Touring his home is like walking back to when Theodore Roosevelt lived in the house. These are just a few attractions offered throughout Long Island Sound, Connecticut.

Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine

The 90-acre park has many attractions, including the Portland Head Light, a lighthouse located on Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. 

Portland Head Light features a museum inside the innkeeper’s quarters. Fun fact: this is the oldest lighthouse in Maine.

Several other attractions within Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, include the ability to tour the arboretum, stroll through the Cliffside Loop, and see the Goddard Mansion. Although the Goddard Mansion can only be seen from the outside.

Another great stop to take along Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth is Ship Cove Beach. 

This small rocky beach is excellent for taking in scenic views. Ship Cove Beach is a great location to have a picnic or take a few minutes to pause and enjoy the moment.

Those with children may enjoy the one-and-a-half-acre Children’s Garden, a great educational experience for kids.

Martha's Vineyard Island, Massachusetts

Martha’s Vineyard is an island that makes the perfect weekend getaway.

Half of the adventure is just getting to Martha’s Vineyard Island, which is only accessible by boat or plane. However, traveling to Martha’s Vineyard Island, is worth it.

The island features a quaint Harbor Town, lighthouses, sandy farmland, and over 19 different beaches. Yup, that’s right. 

Over 19 different beaches! That’s enough beaches to spend an entire vacation just beach hopping.

Other great activities on the island include shopping and dining. 

While here, check out some fresh seafood from one of the many restaurants. The seafood is known to be delicious.

Wildwood, New Jersey

Wildwood, New Jersey, made our list of Northeast Weekend Getaways due to being the perfect beach town. 

The town features over five miles of clean white sandy beaches that feature an iconic boardwalk.

Off the Wildwood boardwalk, you can find ferry rides, a waterpark, boutiques, shoreline dining, arcades, and exciting nightlife. 

With so much to do makes, it is a perfect way to spend a vacation sunbathing on the beach, dining at one of the shoreline restaurants, and checking out the local theme parks that reside off the beach.

New York, New York

Take in the big city vibes of New York. It’s a breathtakingly amazing city with a lot of energy and many attractions and activities. 

The amount of activities there is to do in New York is almost endless.

Some more popular attractions in New York City are the iconic Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Times Square, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Watkins Glen State Park

Watkins Glen State Park is a breathtakingly beautiful area that everyone should visit while in New York City. The park is one of the most popular in this state, and for a good reason. 

What makes the park so popular is that it features 19 different waterfalls.

In addition to seeing multiple waterfalls, the park also takes you in and out of small caves giving stunning views throughout the park. 

The most popular trail within the park is the Watkins Glen Gorge Trail, which can take approximately one to two hours to complete, depending on how many stops you take for photos.

Other attractions at the park are the olympic size swimming pool, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and biking. The Watkins Glen State Park also offers to lodge, allowing you to stay for as long as possible.

Block Island, Rhode Island

Block Island is a perfect summer beach getaway off Rhode Island. 

The island features 17 miles of unspoiled white sandy beaches, spectacular bluffs, and incredible views. Gaining access to Block Island requires a ferry ride from the Inland; however, it is worth it.

While visiting, stop by one of the various beaches offered. Beaches on the island include the famous Ballard’s Beach, Baby Beach, Crescent Beach, Dinghy Beach, and Fred Benson Town Beach. 

Some of the most popular attractions on the beach are parasailing, fishing charters, and boating.

Another great attraction located within the island is the various lighthouses throughout. 

Although most lighthouses do not allow access, you can still see them from the exterior. However, you can tour the museum at Cow Cove and North Lighthouse.
