Indiana Sand Dunes State Park

Come check out the Indiana Sand Dunes State Park and the 200 feet high sand dunes. The park offers a 3-Dune Challenge, a great way to test your strength and stamina. The 3-Dune Challenge encourages individuals to hike the three tallest sand dunes at the park.

The total hike is approximately 1.5 miles, but a 552 vertical climb makes it strenuous. It’s all worth it when you complete the 3-Dune Challenge and get a FREE 3-Dune to conquer sticker. Check out the map of the 3-Dune Challenge.

In addition to hiking the Indiana Sand Dunes, you can visit several trails, giving you various scenic views! Be sure to check out Indiana Sand Dunes State Park!

Hike the Trails at West Beach

You also have the West Beach Trails. The (3) three-loop trail is a total of 3.4 miles.

  • Loop 1 (Dune Succession Trail): This trail gives you some of the most spectacular views from the top. You will see the Chicago skyline in the distance and the vast body of water that makes up Lake Michigan. This trail can be as tricky as you are climbing approximately 250 stairs to get to the top.
  • Loop 2 (West Beach Trail): This trail is much easier than the Dune Succession Trail. The trail is a little over a mile long and offers a viewing platform.
  • Loop 3 (Lake Trail Loop): This trail is only moderately challenging. The trail goes along the lake, giving a lovely view of Lake Michigan. The path has a steep incline that gives you great views from a designated platform.

Hike Mount Baldy

Another great hiking trail at Mount Baldy is the Summit Trail.

Due to the shifting sand dunes, this trail must be hiked by a designed guide appointed by the park.

Usually, guided hikes are on the weekends (primarily in summer) during the daytime and also sunset hikes. Be sure to check out the park’s website for more information.

Another great aspect of Mount Baldy is that you can take a hiking trail called Beach Trail to access Lake Michigan.

The trail is approximately .75 miles and takes 1 hour to hike. It is an in-and-out trail.

For this reason, it may be good to know that steep inclines are leaving the beach.

If you get to the peak of the beach and feel that the hill is too steep, you can stay at the top and enjoy the views.

Another good thing to keep in mind is since the hill you will climb to leave the beach is sandy may make it difficult if you are thinking about bringing coolers, floats, and/or anything else heavy and uncomfortable, you may need to haul up a hill.

When hiking at Mount Baldy, please use caution as the dunes and shoreline constantly shift. In fact, Mount Baldy moves about 4 feet per year. Making it dangerous to hike if you do not stay on the designated trails.

However, they do mark the trails to keep you safe. Pay attention to the path marking and remain on the designated trail.
